X-MEN 97 JP Karliak Interview

X-MEN 97 KP Karliak Interview

Relating to Morph

JP: On a very concrete level, Morph is nonbinary, I identify as genderqueer. But also because Morph is somebody that has experienced so much trauma and [pushes] through it with humor. That is something that I definitely identify with and I think a lot of queer people do. I think that’s very much a part of our stories. I think being in a crew of outsiders feeling a little bit like the outsider […] there is sometimes that feeling I think resonates with people, queer or otherwise, of feeling like somebody who’s the odd person out [on] the team.

For me, it is of paramount importance that a queer kid or a queer person would watch that show and feel uplifted to see a positive representation of a queer superhero. In a way, it’s also important to me that a cis or, hetero human watches this and feels some human connection to this character, even though they have an identity that they don’t personally identify with, or they don’t understand, or it’s new to them, or might feel alien in a way. It’s nice to have people have that sort of nice bond with a character that identifies that way.

Wishlist for Morph’s Future in X-Men 97

JP: I love Morph’s dynamic with Wolverine. I actually would love to see their friendship explored more. We’ve all seen [that] people have said, “Oh the shower scene!” I’m like, hold your roll, guys. I think there’s some beauty in celebrating a queer straight friendship. It doesn’t have to be the queer person pining after the straight person. I don’t know if you need that. So I’d love to see that more. But I would love to see Morph maybe have a romantic interest of his own. Who? I don’t know, but that would be great. I’d love to see him just beat the crap out of Mr. Sinister, just a full-on melee. I don’t know if that’s gonna happen, but it’d be fun. Is any of that going to happen? I don’t know. But I hope so.

ECHO Review

Marvel Studios ECHO Review

Echo packed a lot into 5 episodes (our only complaint really– we wanted more!) from Maya’a backstory to cultural significance and of course some bad*ss fighting. We breakdown what we loved about this series…which may have included some fangirling over Cody Lightning’s Biscuits. But it also meant discussing creative sound usage, hand-to-hand combat, and the acting prowess of both Alaqua and Vincent.

In order to save his best friend, Peter (Chris Pratt) along with Nebula (Karen Gillan), Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Groot (Vin Diesel) will have to confront the mysterious High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) the man behind the brutal experimentation that made Rocket who he is now. Moon Knight Episode 4 Breakdown podcast

Welcome back Marvel fans! Today we are talking about episode 4 of Moon Knight. The race to Ammit’s statue comes to an end in more ways than one. There are a lot of familiar faces here, but what is actually happening? What is real and what is fake? We have some thoughts.

Khonshu’s ushabti is placed on the wall alongside NINE other Egyptian gods. The most recognizable is Anubis. In the comics, Anubis helped Marc when he was trying to escape from Ammit’s illusions. More on that at the end of the episode. If the current Ennead, who is definitely missing members, trapped Anubis, who else have they imprisoned?

Steven and Layla make it inside the tomb of Ammit’s avatar, clearly a wealthy Pharaoh. Bloody mummification tools are at the campsite they raid, however they do not see them. As a result, Layla and Steven wind up in some serious bloody trouble. Inside the tomb, they encounter undead Heka priests and Arthur’s henchman.

Arthur SHOOTS Marc and “kills” him. Or does he? Marc awakens in a mental hospital. Poor Dr. Harrow is only trying to help. There are a lot of familiar faces inside the hospital, even Gus the Goldfish. Marc isn’t sure what to make of all this. If you haven’t read the comics you might equally be confused. Don’t worry that is what we are here for.

More Jake Lockley proof and there is a Hippo goddess.

Welcome back Marvel fans! Today we are talking about episode 3 of Moon Knight. Arthur Harrow has the scarab so Marc needs to find another way to stop him. In Egypt, he teams up with Layla and faces an old comic book foe. Plus did Marvel just reveal there is another identity inside Marc’s body?

Moon Knight Episode 3 Breakdown and Easter Eggs

Layla picks up a fake passport in order to follow Marc to Egypt. Good thing she does that considering he definitely needs her help finding a certain clue to Ammit’s tomb. But before that, Marc and Steven try to get information about Arthur in order to stop him. It doesn’t go as planned and neither of the guys owns up to killing the Ammit followers. Does that mean there is a third identity lurking in the mind? We think so.

This episode introduces MCU fans to Anton Mogart, aka Midnight Man, a comic book foe of Moon Knight. Like in the comics, Anton steals things not because he wants the money but because he likes to collect things. And just like the comics, his encounter with Marc Spector leaves him left for dead… maybe.

After some fancy sky work, Khonshu is imprisoned in a shabti which means Marc/Steven and whoever else is using the body won’t have access to Khonshu’s powers. That could prove to be a big problem next week as the race to get to Ammit’s tomb continues.

Moon Knight Episode 2 Breakdown & Easter Eggs

This week’s episode begins with Steven fired from his job thanks to Marc’s actions the night before–namely destroying a bathroom to kill the attacking jackal. However, the museum only sees Steven lurking around the floor and running from nothing.

In an effort to prove himself NOT crazy, Steven decides he is going to track down the storage locker that goes with the key he found in his apartment. There he discovers not only is Marc real, but he has led a very different life from Steven. Marc wants to take control in order to finish the mission and get away from Khonshu but Steven refuses to give up the body. Khonshu chases Steven outside where he runs into Layla. Layla, who happens to be Marc’s wife.

Arthur Harrow has his cop friends arrest Steven and bring him to his part of London where he attempts to recruit Steven to his side. It doesn’t work and Layla shows up to save him. On the run from the evil magician, Layla tells him to, “Summon the suit.” He does, but it’s not the Moon Knight suit but the Mr. Knight suit. Steven is proud of himself until once again is out of his depth. Then it’s up to Marc to take over and save the night.

But Khonshu has plans–and so does Harrow. Marc needs to get to Egypt before worse things happen.

S3E17: Moon Knight Episode 1 Breakdown & Easter Eggs

moon knight breakdown Easter eggs marvel podcast

Welcome back Marvel fans! Today we are talking about the first MCU show of 2022: Moon Knight. It’s time for the world to meet Marc, um Steven Grant, a gift shopist who has issues sleeping. His dreams seem very realistic, but luckily they are only dreams. Or are they? Soon enough the lines between real and fake are blurred, add in a moon deity and poor Steven’s world is turned completely upside down.

Moon Knight Episode 1 Breakdown & Easter Eggs

The episode starts with a look at cult leader Arthur Harrow. In the show, he is the leader of the followers of Ammit. In the comics, he is a Nobel Prize candidate for his work in pain theory. The glass thing might be a nod to the former unless they explain it more in future episodes.

Steven Grant wakes up chained to his bed. He does this and many other things around his apartment to reassure himself that he did not get up and wander around in the night. After another day at the museum, Steven attempts to stay away. However, he falls asleep at some point and awakens in a field in Germany. If that castle looks familiar then you too watched Marvel’s What If?

Related: Moon Knight Episode 1 Easter Eggs & Breakdown

The voice of Khonshu is heard, clearly annoyed that Steven once again is in control of the body. After a run-in with Harrow and his goons who are after the golden scarab Steven somehow has in his pocket, he flees. But not before he blacks out again and comes to with bloody fists and a pile of beaten-up bad guys around him.

Some more blacking out, more yelling by Khonshu, and poof Steven wakes up back at home. It was all a dream. Or was it? Harrow has followed him to the museum and sends jackals after him at night. Good thing Marc is around-ish to help.

Moon Knight Trailer Breakdown

It’s time to embrace the chaos. If you missed the Moon Knight trailer, watch this first and then let’s talk about it.

Kid Cudi’s Day ‘n’ Night sets the tone for the trailer as we meet Steven Grant who has quite a few issues. Steven? Isn’t this show about Marc? Yes and yes. See one of the things you need to know about Moon Knight is that he has more than one personality. He suffers from dissociative personality disorder and in the comics he has five alters or personalities.

Due to the clever use of mirrors and a Dick Van Dyke cockney accent, the show will attempt to help viewers follow who is in control of Marc at any given time. Cockney accent: Steven, Gruff American who is also kicking butt: Marc Spector/Moon Knight, White Suit: Mr. Knight, and it’s unclear how Jake Lockley will be distinguished from the rest.

Ethan Hawke is playing the villainous Arthur Harrow, a cult leader and the obvious villain of the show. We say obvious because after all there could be another bigger bad lurking in the shadows. No we don’t think it is Mephisto but it could be the Sun King or someone else.

Eternals tie in? Yes there is definitely a tie in here. So if you haven’t watched Eternals, you might want to before the show. It’s on Disney+ now so you can skip undesirable parts aka that unnecessary beach scene. How does it relate to Moon Knight? Well you will have to listen to find out.
